The Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) has implemented a new regulation regarding the professional qualification of construction contractors. Since April 1, 2022, continuing education is mandatory for respondents of Execution of construction work and for certain sub-categories of specialists such as

  • General Contractor: 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.2 and 1.3
  • Specialty Contractor: 15.1.1, 15.2.1, 15.3.1, 15.4.1 and 15.5.1
  • Electrical, plumbing and heating contractor: 15.1, 15.2, 15.3, 15.4, 15.5 and 16.

Some respondents are now required to complete a specific number of training hoursEVERY TWO (2) YEARS to maintain their qualification and continue to act as sponsors.

Depending on the number of subcategories held, or the number of licenses held in several subcategories covered by the Regulation, most contractors will be required to complete 16 hours of training every 2 years. Some specialty contractors will be required to complete between 24 and 32 hours of continuing education depending on the type of subcategory.

Please note that a minimum of 8 hours of training must be related to the execution of the work. The balance of the required hours can be completed as desired. For example, administrative and operational training such as marketing, sales, technology or human resources.

HOW TO DEMONSTRATE THAT YOUR OBLIGATIONS ARE FULFILLED?

In order for the training to be recognized, you must ensure that you receive an attestation confirming the hours and subject of the training. This will allow you to demonstrate to the RBQ that you have fulfilled your obligations for each reference period. Thereafter, it is the contractor's responsibility to register the training taken on his account with the RBQ.
